Imagine a set of blinds in your house on your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector switches on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to form the projector image. An important point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projector screen all at once. The way a DLP projector runs is totally different and even the way an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of creating an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into the single whole image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver top brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at a time, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this further lessens colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior quality. For those who are uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications when compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this can seem to be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is utilised. Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when projected through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in a different way. Usually with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will be projected above and an extra blue will come through below an image of something as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to reduce these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on separate LCD panels.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some ordered manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued location of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to own boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great stakes were held, and the society life was wonderful. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held control. Sailing was largely for fun and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and created a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

The first sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the second half of the 19th century. The style of bigger yachts was initially greatly impacted by the success of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and crafted in today’s sense, with just a model used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Because almost all sailboats had to be individually manufactured, there arose a need for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was decreed, which resulted in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be held on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged primarily for the aristocracy and the affluent, money was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and popularity of smaller craft happened in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of smaller yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and leisure boats became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Bigger power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance cruising became a favoured pastime of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As more sizeable and better quality internal-combustion engines were developed, many large yachts were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. In the decade following, bigger power-yacht building grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that point the biggest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power boats fell away after 1932, and the trend from then was toward smaller, less pricey boats. From World War II, a lot of small naval boats were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a globally popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen individually sailing and upkeeping their own small pleasure yachts. The popularity of yachts and owners increased steadily, not only in the traditional places along the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

The taxes that are usually regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, could become less so in the upper-income demographic—particularly if a taxpayer is allowed to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding particular income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are declared.

Income measured over a given year might not necessarily come up with the best measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory rises in income might be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might select to finance consumption by decreasing savings. It is hard to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden depends fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In considering the economic purpose of taxation, it is relevant to differentiate between various ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are dictated in legislation; usually these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Ergo, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to realise the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may rely on such factors as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the portion of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households can dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that lower as income rises.
